A strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday evening. The provisional toll has so far been at least one dead and numerous injured. According to regional media, the victim is a young woman from Stolac, the town in Herzegovina (south of the country) close to the epicenter of the earthquake, identified in Liubinje. The woman died in hospital in Mostar from the serious injuries sustained in her home which was affected by collapses. Several wounded were taken to Mostar hospitals. The media reported damage to old buildings and several cars hit by rubble and collapsed chimneys.

In Mostar, the historic capital of Herzegovina, numerous panicked people poured into the street after the strong earthquake that shook the buildings. Many spent the night outdoors. Local authorities speak of possible structural damage to old buildings, which can be verified in daylight. Great fear caused the earthquake in the neighboring countries of the region – Croatia, Montenegro and also some regions of Serbia. The quake was distinctly felt in large cities such as Sarajevo, Tuzla, Split, Podgorica.

The quake occurred 42 kilometers southeast of the city of Mostar at a depth of 5 kilometers at 23:07 local time, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The shock was also felt in most of Italy, from Friuli Venezia Giulia to Campania.
