The number of job vacancies in July reaches 10.9 million, a record high
On Wednesday (September 8), the U.S. Department of Labor released data showing that due to the difficulty of companies to fill record job vacancies, in July, the number of job vacancies exceeded the number of unemployed 2 million.
The Department of Labor’s Job Vacancies and Labor Flow Survey (JOLTS) showed that in July, there were 10.9 million job vacancies across the United States, far higher than FactSet’s estimate of 9.9 million and June’s 10.18 million. At the same time, in July, the number of unemployed and job seekers in the United States reached 8.7 million, more than 2 million fewer than the number of job vacancies.
The job vacancy rate measured by the total labor force in July rose to 6.9% from 6.5% last month and 4.6% a year ago. The largest increase in job vacancies was in health care and social assistance; finance and insurance; and accommodation and catering services.
The leisure and hotel sector has a 10.7% vacancy rate. Although this sector suffered the most during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of job postings rose to 1.82 million in July, an increase of 134,000 from June.
Job vacancies in financial activities have also increased significantly, with the vacancy rate rising from 3.8% in June to 5.8%, with 200,000 new jobs. Government job vacancies have also increased significantly, from 4.2% to 4.6%, or nearly 100,000 jobs.
More countries have started the third shot of vaccines
