A fire broke out near Wolfenschiessen in the canton of Nidwalden late on Tuesday evening. As the Nidwalden cantonal police wrote in a statement, a report was received at 10:30 p.m. that the industrial building at the parquetry was on fire. When the fire brigade arrived, the building was already fully ablaze – flames had already spread to the directly adjacent residential building.

Three firefighters injured

All 17 residents were able to be brought to safety in time. They were uninjured, it is said. Although the fire was quickly brought under control, the extinguishing work, in which three firefighters were slightly injured, was still ongoing early on Wednesday morning.

Nothing is yet known about the cause of the fire – the investigation is ongoing. Specialists from the Nidwalden cantonal police and the Zurich Forensic Institute are involved.

Due to the major fire, the main road between Wolfenschiessen and Grafenort/Engelberg had to be closed. The work is causing a huge backlog. The vehicles are stuck in a traffic jam for six kilometers. Rail traffic is also affected – the Central Railway route between Wolfenschiessen and Grafenort/Engelberg is expected to be interrupted until ten o’clock. There are no replacement buses.
