Apfel was a central figure in the American fashion industry with her distinctive style and large, round glasses.
She only really became famous when she was in her 80s, and was referred to as a fashion icon.

In the 1950s, she worked as an interior designer for names such as Greta Garbo and Estée Lauder. Together with her husband, Carl Apfel, she started the company Old World Weavers which sold and restored textiles, including for the White House. The couple sold the company in 1992 and retired, but Iris continued as a consultant.
In 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Art displayed an exhibition of Apfel’s wardrobe. 82 outfits and 300 accessories were shown here. The exhibition was a super success, and Apfel became a fashion favorite almost overnight.
Fashion icon is dead
She appeared in magazines, in advertising campaigns and on social media.
In 2018, she published the book Iris Apfel: Accidental Iconand the following year she signed a modeling contract at the age of 97. At 100 years old, she designed her own collection for clothing giant H&M inspired by her own eccentric and flamboyant style.
