After a strong season so far, FC Sion is about to return to the Super League. The Challenge League team is already up there with the big players when it comes to efficiency.
The CIES statisticians calculated this based on data from Wyscout: According to this, Sion scores 0.49 more goals per game than would actually be expected. The expected goals value is used to help. This tells you how many goals a team would have to score per game based on their chances and finishing opportunities. At Sion the value in the current season is 1.43. In fact, the Walliers scored an average of 1.92 goals. The players are performing much more efficiently than expected and are making a lot of use of their opportunities. By the way, goals resulting from penalties are not taken into account.
The most efficient team out of a total of 54 leagues taken into account is the Greek first division team PAOK Saloniki (+0.69) ahead of Sporting (+0.59), AS Roma (+0.52) and the Polish first division club Jagiellonia Bialystok (+0.51) .
Also noteworthy is the value of the Italian high-flyers Inter Milan, which is +0.44. This puts the Nerazzurri in 10th place – two places behind Ronaldo’s club Al-Nassr (+0.45). However, neither top club is quite as good as Sion.
YB is also far ahead as the best club from the Super League: with +0.43, the Bernese are in 14th place.
