Actor Paulo Gustavo (1978-2021) will be honored in the new chapter of the “Minha Vida em Marte” franchise, one of the biggest hits in Brazilian cinema. The third film had been shelved with the tragic death of the artist, a victim of complications from Covid-19.
At the time, director Susana Garcia and screenwriter Mônica Martelli chose not to continue the project due to the pain of grief. But this process ended up being crucial to the decision to give a new meaning to the franchise starring Paulo Gustavo.
In conversation with columnist Patrícia Kogut, from the newspaper O Globo, Mônica explained that she decided to remove the focus on the character Fernanda’s love life to bring an approach to grief.
“After Paulo Gustavo left, I was sure I was never going to make the film again. But there was a day when, when I got home, I thought: ‘I have a mission in life, to always write what I go through. I’m going to do this friend suffering the pain of this grief’. Then I started writing a script. My life is divided between before and after Paulo. I’ve never laughed the same again. He empowered me and trusted me a lot. We exchanged a lot, we had several plans together”, lamented Monica.

With the comedian’s death, the film will be adapted to honor the artist in another way. Director Susana Garcia revealed that she has a series of recordings of the character Aníbal, from the first film, which will be rescued in the form of a flashback, bringing never-before-seen scenes of Paulo Gustavo to the screen one last time in the new release.
