Football | Bundesliga: RB Leipzig finally fourth with a point against Werder Bremen

As of: May 11, 2024 5:59 p.m

RB Leipzig has secured fourth place in the Bundesliga ahead of schedule. In the last home game of the season, Marco Rose’s team couldn’t get past a draw against Werder Bremen. But then FSV Mainz provided support with a 3-0 win against BVB, so that nothing can change for RB in the table on the last matchday.

RB Leipzig only played 1:1 (0:1) against Werder Bremen in the last home game of the season. Leipzig scored both goals: First Niklas Seiwald was “successful” with an own goal (36th), and substitute Benjamin Sesko equalized in the second half (61st). Thanks to the little point and Mainz’s 3-0 win against Dortmund, Marco Rose’s team can no longer be pushed out of fourth place.

Gulacsi can only look back: Werder took a 1-0 lead.

More will than precision

The Leipzig team, with Yussuf Poulsen in the attack again after a long time, started with commitment. But there weren’t more than a few promising situations. The offensive actions against cleverly defending guests were too imprecise. In any case, they started cautiously, only rarely attacking, but more dangerously: Romano Schmid narrowly missed the ball (22nd), Leonardo Bittencourt headed past his teammate Mitchell Weiser from the 5-pointer (26th). So the 0-1 in the 36th minute didn’t come as a surprise, even though it was scored by a Leipzig player: Seiwald headed the ball into the triangle of his own box in front of Nick Woltemade. Great opportunities for the increasingly erratic people of Leipzig? None – until stoppage time, when Mohamed Simakan and Poulsen each failed from close range to Werder keeper Michael Zetterer (45th + 3).

Sesko comes and scores

RB came out of the break with Sesko instead of Poulsen and significantly more energy. Just 59 seconds after the restart, Werder keeper Zetterer made a brilliant save to prevent Christoph Baumgartner from scoring a header. RB worked constantly on the equalizer, which then came in the 61st minute: After a long cross from the unfortunate Seiwald, Simakan set up Sesko, who hit the ball from 14 m into the left triangle. After that, Leipzig clearly went 2-1, but had to be extremely careful. Because Werder attacked less often, but it was often very dangerous. In the final phase, a Bremen counterattack goal was in the air several times, but RB was able to defend each time with a bit of luck. And in stoppage time, keeper Peter Gulacsi kept the point on the line with a super reflex when Jens Stages headed the ball (90th + 3).
