Former Dominican President Leonel Fernández Calls for Action on Citizen Insecurity

Former Dominican president and presidential candidate, Leonel Fernández, has raised concerns about the alarming levels of citizen insecurity in the country. In a video posted on his social media accounts, Fernández stated that the fear of losing one’s life or being attacked is causing trauma and heartbreak for Dominican families.

According to Fernández, this fear is hindering the prosperity of the people. He highlighted stories from young people who have had their phones stolen on the streets, often obtained through exchange programs with telephone companies. Mothers also express their fear for the safety of their children. Fernández emphasized that a country where the people live in fear will never achieve true prosperity.

Fernández, who currently leads the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) party, stressed the need for concrete actions to address the current situation of insecurity. He called on the government to utilize technology to prevent crime, identify areas with the highest crime rates, and increase the presence of security forces in these areas.

Additionally, Fernández recommended implementing education, training, and employment programs, specifically targeted towards young entrepreneurs in all neighborhoods. He believes that providing opportunities and support will help close the doors to crime.

Fernández also called for a new prison policy system, one that includes mandatory training and work obligations for inmates. He argued that prisons should not be breeding grounds for criminal activity and deception.

In conclusion, Fernández urged the government to take immediate action to address the issue of citizen insecurity and create a safer environment for all Dominicans.
