Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to one year in prison without parole for illegal campaign funding in the 2012 presidential election.
The court specified that “the penalty will be applied and executed according to the electronic surveillance regime”. The former president, 66, who was not present in the courtroom, will therefore not go to jail. And he has already filed an appeal.
The prosecutor had asked Sarkozy for one year in prison, including six months on probation. The president of the Eleventh Chamber of the Correctional Chamber said that the former president “continued the organization of the electoral meetings” after being “warned in writing that” the legal threshold for funding campaign activities was exceeded. “It wasn’t his first campaign, he had candidate experience,” he said.
