An attack against the central bank in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was repelled by security forces on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of several assailants. The Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) faced an attack by a group of gang members, but their security agents, along with police and the army, successfully defended the premises. Unfortunately, one BRH security guard was injured during the altercation.
In response to the attack, the Bank expressed gratitude to their security team and the national police for their dedication to protecting the community. The incident comes amidst ongoing gang violence in Port-au-Prince, which has led to blackouts in several areas due to theft of materials from the public electricity company’s substations.
Haiti is currently facing a deep political and security crisis, with recent violence escalating following attacks on strategic locations in the capital. Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who recently announced his resignation, is expected to be replaced by a transitional presidential council. However, disagreements have delayed the formation of this council.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on all parties in Haiti to set aside their differences and implement the agreed-upon transitional governance arrangements. The situation remains tense, with reports of multiple fatalities in Port-au-Prince and ongoing political challenges facing the country.
