Europe condemns the repression of the demonstrations that have been held in the last few days Georgia against the controversial law on foreign agents modeled on that in force in Russia and criticized by the European Union. More than 60 people were arrested during protests in the capital Tbilisi: demonstrators are accused of vandalism and disobedience to authority. The leader of the opposition United National Movement was injured in clashes with the police. Levan Khabeishvili, who shared a photo on social media in which the injuries to his face are evident. The deputy, according to the deputy interior minister Alexander Darakhvelidzand, he allegedly tried to break through the police cordon and disobeyed the orders given by the officers, six of whom were injured.
The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU Joseph Borrell on X he condemned the violence used by Georgian security forces. Highlighting Georgia’s status as a candidate EU member, he called on the government “to guarantee the right of peaceful assembly. The use of force to suppress it is unacceptable,” she wrote.
The protesters contest the law promoted by the ruling Georgian Dream party, which will force all organizations, media and other entities that receive at least the 20% financing from abroad. The opposition considers it a replica of the Russian law, which has turned into an instrument of repression of dissidence.
