Geotab, a global leader in connected vehicle technology, presents its 2023 Sustainability and Environmental Impact Report, highlighting how data-driven insights are helping Geotab and companies around the world to measure and achieve climate protection objectives more efficiently.
Furthermore, the report delves into the more complex challenges related to the urgency of balancing environmental impact with business needs, such as the increase in business travel and the need for greater transparency regarding Scope 3 emissions.
The main contribution that Geotab can make is to leverage data analytics and artificial intelligence to guide customers and partners through the transformation process, enabling them to make informed decisions, reporting and tracking progress at all stages of the journey towards sustainability. Data relating to fuel consumption, routes, emissions management, the optimization of driving behavior (for example with the reduction of sudden braking), as well as the integration of electric vehicles into fleets, also contribute to limiting the costs and improve profits.
As part of its commitment to creating a more sustainable world, Geotab aims to achieve zero emissions by 2040 – therefore a decade ahead of what is required by the Paris Agreement – and aims for a 50% reduction in emissions of Scope 1, 2 and 3 by 2030.
The 2023 edition of the report highlights how Geotab has made significant progress in reducing direct and indirect operational emissions over the past year. In Scope 1, which takes into account emissions from sources controlled or owned by Geotab, the company saw a 47% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 (compared to the 2019 baseline). In Scope 2, which tracks indirect emissions resulting from electricity purchases, the company saw a 35% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 (compared to the 2019 baseline).
New collaborations to drive change: Formation of the Geotab Sustainability Alliance, made up of more than 28 partners offering integrated solutions to help fleets achieve their sustainability goals. Major R&D breakthroughs: Opening of the Geotab Automotive Innovation and Research Hub in High Wycombe, England, dedicated to advancing the data intelligence needed to drive scale-up electrification in transportation. Geotab supports over 300 makes and models of electric vehicles globally.
Better waste diversion: In the European Union, Geotab is working on a number of initiatives to meet the requirements for compliance with the WEEE Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment. Recognitions and awards for leadership and results achieved in favor of the environment: EcoVadis bronze medal for sustainability assessment and Bronze Stevie® Award in the categories Sustainability Product of the Year and leadership in sustainability.
The report identifies some areas for improvement that reflect a number of challenges shared, in general, with the entire sector. Regarding Scope 3, which tracks indirect emissions, such as those linked to supply chain activities, Geotab recorded an 11% increase in 2023 (compared to the 2019 reference scenario), mainly due to greater purchases of goods and services and increased business travel and commuting. Difficulty in collecting accurate and reliable data on Scope 3 emissions across the supply chain, mainly due to varying data availability across regions.
