German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Urge China to Reduce Economic Support for Russia in Efforts to Resolve Ukraine Conflict

As the conflict in Ukraine enters its third year with no end in sight, German officials have revealed Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s plan to urge Chinese leader Xi Jinping to reduce China’s economic support for Russia. Scholz aims to pressure Moscow to participate in peace talks on Ukraine with the goal of resolving the conflict on terms acceptable to Kiev.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has seen Kiev demand a complete withdrawal of Russian troops and compensation, while Moscow plans to retain the occupied Ukrainian territories. Western officials fear Russia may launch a new offensive in the coming months.

A senior German official stated, “We want to show China that this war is illegal and violates our core interests. China should actively participate in all efforts to end this war.” The reduction of Chinese support could be pivotal in bringing Moscow back to the negotiating table.

Despite incremental progress, the conflict has proven costly for both sides, with prospects for a decisive military victory dim. The West has faced challenges in gaining Chinese support for diplomatic solutions, as Chinese companies continue to provide crucial components for Russian weapons.

Fabrice Pothier, a former NATO official advising Kyiv, emphasized the importance of gaining Chinese support to end the conflict. Pothier highlighted the need for a clear message that a neutral solution for Ukraine is not viable and urged China to play a role in resolving the aggression.

Negotiations involving China, Ukraine, and Russia have been explored, with some Western governments considering a trade war with China to exert pressure on Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insists on Chinese involvement in any peace deal, emphasizing China’s potential role as a guarantor of any agreement.
