So it was her last dance. In December, Gil Roman, 63, imagined himself in the shoes of a man crushed by the routine of his days. It was called Nivagation, the show was by Marc Hollogne at the Théâtre de Beaulieu and the artist ended up setting sail on a sailboat. One month later, the artistic director of Béjart Ballet Lausanne (BBL) was fired. More than a grain, as the sailors say, it’s an earthquake. Wasn’t the artist at the helm of the ship since the death of Maurice Béjart in 2007?
But how did the BBL foundation board get to this point? “Gil Roman invited the former production director of the BBL, fired for attitudes amounting to sexual harassment, to an evening at the Paris Opera where the company was performing,” explains Grégoire Junod, trustee of the city of Lausanne and president ad interim of the BBL Foundation. “The framework defined by the 2021 audit was clear: we would not tolerate any breach of the rules set. The unacceptable presence of this person hurt dancers.”
