Girona stumbled again in the Spanish Championship. The (still) La Liga sensation, this Sunday (3/3) went to Mallorca, to face the local club, at the Son Moix Stadium, and lost 1-0. The goal that decided this game in the 27th round was from Copete, even in the first half.
With this being their third defeat in four rounds, Girona practically says goodbye to their dream of the title. After all, with 59 points, they see Real Madrid opening up seven points in the lead. And the Catalan team continues with Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid on their heels. Mallorca celebrates a victory that takes them to 27 points. In this way, they open eight against Cádiz, the first within the relegation zone.
Mallorca takes the lead
The first 25 minutes of the game were full of studies, without any dangerous moves. But, in the first real opportunity, Mallorca reached the goal, at 33. A corner from the left generated a rebound that stopped at Copete’s feet. The shot was strong, with no chance of defense for Gazzaniga. After the goal the game was open, with the teams looking to finish. But imprecisely.
Girona tries. But the ball doesn’t go in
In the second half, as time passed, Girona began to dominate. More closed, Mallorca was happy to avoid dangerous moves. And proof of this was that Girona, although they had a lot of shots on goal (16 shots), only four were on target. In the best of them, in stoppage time, Brazilian right-back Yan Couto appeared free and fired. But goalkeeper Rajkovic saved, clearing the corner. In the end, Girona had more possession (60%) and the same number of shots as their rival (16). But it was Mallorca who came out on top and ended an incredible week: in the middle of the week they had already qualified for the Copa del Rey final.
