Former President of TSJ Gladys Gutiérrez Approved as Venezuelan Ambassador to Spain by Chavismo Commission
The Foreign Policy Commission of Chavismo in the Federal Legislative Palace unanimously approved the appointment of former president of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) Gladys Gutiérrez as ambassador to Spain. Gutiérrez, who previously held the position representing the government of former president Hugo Chávez from 2002 to 2005, will now require ratification to make her role official.
The commission highlighted the importance of Gutiérrez’s diplomatic agenda, including advocating for Venezuela’s interests in disputed territories like Essequibo and focusing on economic and consular matters. Commission members emphasized the need to protect Venezuelan migrants and defend the country from external threats, especially in the lead-up to the upcoming presidential elections in July.
Gutiérrez, who served as TSJ president from 2013 to 2017 and again from April 2022 to January 2023, is a graduate of the Central University of Venezuela and has specialized in law, constitutional, and political science. She has also worked as a researcher in international studies at the Complutense University of Madrid.
Despite being sanctioned by the US government in 2017, Gutiérrez’s appointment as ambassador to Spain signals Venezuela’s ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with European countries. The commission’s decision reflects a commitment to promoting Venezuela’s interests abroad and defending the country’s sovereignty in the face of external pressures.
