The famous photographer Abbas Attar would have turned 80 today – Google is dedicating a doodle to him on Good Friday.
Among other things, he documented the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968, but was initially best known for his photos from crisis areas. He traveled about Biafra, Bangladesh or Northern Ireland. Abbas also recorded grievances in various regions of the world.
He reported on conditions during the Apartheid regime in South Africa and about the Revolution im Iran and flew to write a travel diary Mexico.
Multiple paradigm shifts
At the end of the 70s, the photographer temporarily concentrated on Fashion photographybefore he did that in the late 80s Resurrection of Islam from China to Morocco accompanied. A highly acclaimed photo book called “Allah O Akbar, a journey through militant Islam” was also published.
From the year 2000 onwards he once again made a paradigm shift and increasingly devoted himself to… World religions. Photo books and exhibitions on Christianity, Islam and Buddhism appeared.
Abbas, who was born in Iran in 1944, died in Paris in 2018. He would have been 80 in 2024. “Today’s doodle is dedicated to Iranian photojournalist Abbas Attar, who has documented the experiences and hardships of societies around the world through his reporting”says Google on Good Friday.
