Bayer Leverkusen won the first German championship title in their history on Sunday. The teammates of Granit Xhaka, scorer, secured their coronation by winning 5-0 against Werder Bremen.
A penalty scored by Victor Boniface (25th) put Leverkusen on the right track in the first half, before Granit Xhaka unleashed his colors with a magnificent left-footed strike 25 meters from the opposing goal (60th). Florian Wirtz completed Bayer’s success with a remarkable hat-trick (68th, 83rd, 90th).
With this 25th victory in 29 championship days, Xabi Alonso’s men can no longer be caught at the top of the Bundesliga standings, with five matches remaining. They are still on course to finish the season undefeated.
Bayern Munich must therefore return its champion crown after eleven years of supremacy. This is the first time since 2012 and Borussia Dortmund’s title that the Bavarians have not won the ‘Meisterschale’.
