A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Crete, Greece, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 80 km (49.7 miles), the EMSC said.
According to the Ingv the power of the earthquake was slightly lower, magnitude 5.5, and occurred at 6:08 Italian time (7:08 local time in the area of the earthquake) in the sea south of the island at a depth of 20 kilometers.
Already two days ago the earth shook in Greece, with a quake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale off the eastern part of the island of Crete, Greece. The National Observatory of Athens had reported the epicenter 71 km east of the municipality of Sitia, and 48 km southwest of the island of Kasos, at a depth of 8.9 km. In addition to Crete, the quake had been felt in several other islands, including Kassos, Rhodes and Santorini, according to local media.
Also on December 26, another earthquake, of magnitude 4, was felt west of Athens. The epicenter was located at a depth of 16.4 kilometers.
