“A patrol car is not a taxi.” Controversy and protests in the streets following the response given to the 28-year-old by a service agent at the Greek emergency call center Kyriaki Griva, who asked for help just moments before being killed by her ex-boyfriend. The young woman was stabbed to death last Tuesday by her ex-partner 39enne right outside the police station in Agioi Anargyroon the outskirts of Athens, where she had gone to report yet another threat received from the man.
Griva had asked to be escorted home, but at the police station they told her to call ‘100‘, the emergency number. The last dramatic moments of the young woman while she spoke to the call center, a few seconds before her ex-boyfriend attacked and killed her, were recorded and made public by the program Live News Of Mega. “Help, he’s here, he came here”, we hear Griva say while, shortly after, her cries are heard “she’s killing her, she’s killing her”.
Previously the young woman had asked for a police squad to be sent to escort her home. “The police car is not a taxi, I will send it home if you want”, the response of the operator who claimed that he had not realized the dangerous situation and has now been removed from office. The spokesperson of the Greek government, Pavlos Marinakis, speaking on a television program, said that mistakes had been made in the behavior of the police. “What happened to Agioi Anargyros it cannot be excused or compensated, everything went wrong,” said Marinakis, adding that the fact must be condemned, but women who need help must not be discouraged and trust in the police must remain. The head of the Athens Prosecutor’s Office, Antonis Eleftherianosordered a full-scale investigation into “possible failings on the part of the police officers on duty at the time of the tragedy.”
