Thirteen prison guards were arrested in Italy on Monday for assaulting minors incarcerated in Milan and eight others were suspended.

These arrests at the “Cesare Beccaria” juvenile prison, located on the outskirts of the Lombard capital, came following an investigation into attacks committed since 2022, the police said in a press release.

The guards in question are accused of “complicity in acts of torture (…) aggravated by an abuse of power”, “complicity in assault on minors”, and there is also a case of “attempted sexual violence “.

Investigators managed to unmask the alleged perpetrators of violence thanks to telephone interceptions and images from the detention center’s internal surveillance circuit, as well as testimonies from former detainees, according to the press release.

Italian prisons suffer from overcrowding and insufficient funding.

In January, more than 60,300 inmates were incarcerated in prisons designed to accommodate a maximum of 47,300 people, according to the prison supervisory body.
