Hanung Bramantyo Raises the Issue of Harassment at God, Allow Me to Sin

Jakarta – God, Allow Me to Sin, directed by Hanung Bramantyo, is the opening film of Jakarta Film Week 2023. There are many stories from the creative process of making the film which raise various sensitive issues in it.

Hanung Bramantyo said that one of the issues in this film is raising the issue of sexual harassment in religious environments.

“In my opinion, this film would not exist if our religious situation were not like it is today. Harassment in religious circles, those who wear religious masks, the fault is not religion but people who are cowards and cowards,” he said when met at Jakarta Film Week.

Hanung continued, he made the film God, Allow Me to Sin, as a form of disappointment and sadness he experienced.

“Now it comes to mind again after cases that occurred in Islamic boarding schools or study groups, this does not refer to religion but to certain groups,” he added.

God, Allow Me to Sin is a film adapted from the novel by Muhidin M Dahlan with the title God, Allow Me to Be a Prostitute! which was published in 2003.

According to Hanung’s story, he had read the book that year. He knows that the story he adapted has pros and cons.

“The writer is also under the same umbrella as me at Muhammadiyah. That year was also very tough, yes, during the government at that time. Groups acting in the name of a place could be disbanded,” he said again.

“I’m also afraid to watch my film, yes, I don’t think this film would exist if our religious situation wasn’t like it is now,” he continued.

After going through a long process since the beginning of the pandemic, Hanung finally created a title that was slightly different from the original work. The choice of title was considered a little ‘tricky’.

“Why did we finally choose this title? We are adapting a novel, not filming a novel. Because it’s only an adaptation, I feel it’s unfair to use a fancy title. This is a bestseller novel and has been appreciated, but my film hasn’t. If the title was the same, it would be really tricky, I just feel like it’s unfair,” he said.

Synopsis:

This film tells the story of Nadya Kirani, a member of the Rohis or Al-Qur’an study group on her campus. He believes that the democratic system played a major role in the destruction of the world, including in Indonesia.

Together with the Dardariyah Islamic organization, Nadya fought to preach the Khilafah system which was considered ideal and in accordance with Islamic law. However, her decision to join this organization made Nadya choose a different path.

The characters in this film star Aghniny Haque as Kirani, Donny Damara as Tomo, Djenar Maesa Ayu as Ami, Andri Mashadi as Da’rul, Samo Rafael as Hudan, and Nugie as Alim Suganda.

This film is planned to be shown on May 22 in all cinemas in the country.
