– Making an effort for the church is one of the most meaningful things I can think of, says the new church council leader in a press release.
Hegstad is now the supreme elected leader of the Church of Norway for the next four years.
The election between Hegstad and opposing candidate Gard Sandaker-Nielsen took place during the annual Church Meeting, which is the highest democratic, representative body in the Church of Norway.
Hegstad received 60 votes, while Sandaker-Nielsen received 55.
Emphasis on collaboration
Hegstad is a professor at MF science college, where he teaches and conducts research on doctrine of faith and church understanding. He has a long career in the church as a theologian, and is, among other things, a former leader of the Oslo diocese council.
Hegstad was also deputy leader of the Church Council from 2016 to 2020.
As newly elected leader, he will emphasize finding unifying solutions and cooperation across differences of opinion.
He points out that the Church of Norway can mean something very special to people in a time characterized by conflicts.
– The gospel of peace and reconciliation in Jesus Christ more important than ever. As a folk church, Den norske kirke has a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of society and individuals. It should be an open church for everyone who needs it, in joy and in sorrow.
– Thankful
Hegstad takes over the leadership post from Kristin Gunleiksrud Raaum, who has led the Church Council since 2016.
The Church Council was established in 1969 and its main task is to be the Church Meeting’s preparatory and implementing body. In practice, the Church Council governs on behalf of the Church of Norway’s members.
– I am grateful for the trust from the Church Meeting, and look forward to leading the Church Council’s work for the next four years, says the newly appointed Church Council leader.
