Shawwal fasting is one of the sunnah worships carried out after Eid al-Fitr 1 Shawwal. This fast can start from the 2nd of Shawwal until the end of the month of Shawwal.

Unlike Ramadan fasting, Shawwal fasting is not carried out for the full 30 days.

Shawwal fasting is a worship that has sunnah laws. This means that fasting on Shawwal is not obligatory, but Allah promises a reward for those who observe it.

The Prophet said in the following hadith about the fasting of Syawal, “Whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan, then follows it with six days in the month of Syawal, then it is like fasting for a year.” (HR. Muslim)

Even though it is sunnah, this worship has a very big priority because it is likened to fasting without stopping so that you can get a reward equivalent to fasting for a whole year.

Not to mention, performing fasting makes a person get a practice that is multiplied by Allah Swt.

How many days of Syawal fasting?

According to the written hadith, the question of how many days of fasting in Shawwal must be done can be answered.

The length of fasting for Shawwal is six days. This fast can be carried out from the 2nd of Shawwal until the end of the month of Shawwal.

The reason why worship is carried out from the 2nd of Shawwal is because on Eid al-Fitr it is forbidden to fast.

Reporting from the NU Online page, Syawal fasting is recommended to be carried out for six days consecutive. This means, if you fast from the 2nd of Shawwal then the fast ends on the 7th of Shawwal.

However, some scholars say that Shawwal fasting can be done separately and does not have to be consecutive.

Sheikh Ibnu Hajar al-Haitami in Tuhfatul Muhtaj fi Syarhil Minhaj opined that fasting Syawal should not be consecutive, by choosing six days that are convenient and convenient in the month of Syawal.

From the opinion of Sheikh Ibnu Hajar Al-Haitami, a person can fast Syawal every Monday and Thursday, passing the 13th, 14th, 15th of Syawal because in the middle of the month there is fasting Ayyamul Bidh, or on days they are free so they can fast.

However, Sheikh Ibnu Hajar Al-Haitami also stated that if someone intends to fast Monday-Thursday or Ayyamul Bidh, the fast is still included as a Shawwal fast because this fasting command itself can still be carried out regardless of the intention to fast.

Based on the 2024 Indonesian Hijri Calendar published by the Ministry of Religion, this year Eid al-Fitr 1 Shawwal 1445 Hijri falls on Wednesday, April 10 2024.

This is the first fast of Shawwal 1445 that can be carried out after that date, namely starting April 11 2024 (2 Shawwal 1445 H).

Syawal fasting intention

So how can someone observe the Shawwal fast? Actually, it’s simple, because the procedures for fasting in Shawwal are the same as fasting in Ramadan and sunnah fasting in general.

This means that a person is required to restrain himself and not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. However, the intentions read are certainly different from other fasting intentions.

Here is the reading of the Syawal fasting intention

I intended to fast tomorrow in order to fulfill the Sunnah of Shawwal for God Almighty.

Nawaitu shauma ghadin ‘an adâ’i sunnatis Syawwâli lillâhi ta’aalaa.

Meaning: “I intend to fast the sunnah of Shawwal tomorrow because of Allah SWT.”

Because it is included in sunnah fasting, it doesn’t matter if you forget to read this intention at night. The reading for the intention of fasting for Shawwal during the day is:

I intended to fast this day in order to fulfill the Sunnah of Shawwal for God Almighty.

I call you shauma hâdzal yaumi ‘an adâ’i sunnatis Syawwâli lillâhi ta’aalaa.

Meaning: “I intend to fast the sunnah of Shawwal today because of Allah SWT.”

Hopefully the explanation above can answer the question about how many days to fast in Shawwal. Good luck.
