(LaPresse) Devotees from across India celebrated the opening of a controversial Hindu temple built on the ruins of a historic mosque. The temple, dedicated to the Hindu deity Prince Rama, stands at a site in the northern city of Ayodhya where Hindu extremists tore down a mosque in 1992. The temple was inaugurated Monday morning by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The troubled history of the mosque is still an open wound for many Muslims, increasingly the object of attacks by Hindu nationalist groups. Some see the temple as the greatest symbol of the rise of Hindu supremacy in the country under Modi’s tenure. (LaPresse/Ap)
