Hong Kong RGC approved HK$400 million to fund eight research projects, two involving COVID-19-Policy Zone-Biology Valley

The Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) announced on the 13th the funding results of the 2021/2022 thematic research plan. 8 outstanding research proposals were approved for funding of more than 400 million yuan (HK$, the same below), of which 2 projects are related to the new crown pneumonia related.

It is reported that 8 outstanding research proposals have been approved for a total of 415 million yuan, of which 367 million yuan will be provided by the RGC and 48 million yuan will be provided by the relevant universities in a matching manner.

It can be seen from the funding document that 2 of the 8 research projects are related to the new crown pneumonia, which are “virological, immunological and epidemiological characteristics of the new crown virus” to reveal the spread and pathogenicity of the virus, and to formulate a vaccine against the new crown pneumonia The other project is “New Coronavirus Ecology, Molecular Virology and Pathogenic Mechanism: From Clinical to Experimental and Back to Clinical”, to propose a new plan to develop a live attenuated vaccine and a synthetic vaccine for the new coronavirus, and Create new drugs against the new coronavirus or host. The universities involved in the above research include the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Hong Kong Baptist University.
The remaining six research projects cover areas such as neonatal liver disease, stem cell engineering, the creation of thermal comfort communities, green finance, early childhood academic achievement, and art and technology.
Huang Yushan, chairman of the RGC, said that he expects the above-mentioned projects to bring social and economic benefits to Hong Kong. He also revealed that in addition to the 230 million yuan funding for regular thematic research projects, the RGC has allocated an additional 100 million yuan for the 2021/2022 thematic research plan to fund research related to COVID-19 and other new infectious diseases.
