Hong Kong Sees Over 100,000 Applications for Talent Import Programs, Signaling Global Appeal

Hong Kong’s various talent import programs have received a tremendous response, with over 100,000 applications received by the SAR government, according to Chief Executive Li Jiachao. Li Jiachao shared this information during the 50th anniversary celebration of Hong Kong’s “Media Daily” on July 10.

Li Jiachao emphasized that Hong Kong possesses a unique advantage as a city that is “backed by the motherland and connected to the world.” It is the only city that combines the advantages of China and the global market. Holding the top ranking in the world not only signifies Hong Kong’s international status and reputation, but also serves as a reminder to continuously enhance its international competitiveness.

In his first policy address, Li Jiachao proposed that Hong Kong should actively seek to attract both businesses and talent. The success of the talent import programs is evident, as the number of applications for various schemes has surpassed 100,000 by the end of June this year. This figure is nearly triple the annual target of 35,000 talents, indicating Hong Kong’s strong appeal to global talents.

While the city continues to excel in traditional sectors such as finance, trade, and shipping, Li Jiachao emphasized the importance of exploring new economic growth opportunities. Hong Kong should dare to venture into emerging industries such as technology, culture, and art, in order to achieve high-quality development. Recent research by a prominent institution has highlighted Hong Kong’s “Emerging Ecosystems,” ranking it first in Asia and second in the world among the top 100 start-up ecosystems. This recognition affirms the city’s efforts in politics, industry, learning, and research and development cooperation, and reveals the immense potential for growth, where over 800 fintech companies are currently operating.

Looking ahead, Li Jiachao expressed that major economies across the globe are striving to catch up after facing numerous challenges in recent years. Hong Kong should consolidate its international competitiveness, share positive stories about the city, unite its society, and work together to build a brighter future. By doing so, Hong Kong will continue to shine as the Pearl of the Orient.
