New research reveals that a small change in women can tell if they are psychopaths or not. Body language can reveal so much and detectives all over the world know this very well. And when it comes to psychological disorders, to be more precise psychopathynon-verbal behavior plays an important role.
“Nonverbal behavior (i.e., head dynamics) represents an important but understudied form of communication that may improve our ability to detect certain forms of psychopathology, including psychopathy“, said the authors of the study from the University of New Mexico.
Using an automated detection algorithm, the research team determined that women who keep their heads perfectly still or with “minimum movements while talking possess a high level of psychopathic tendencies.
“Here we used an automated technique to detect, extract and analyze the position and dynamics of the head in relation to psychopathic traits, using the example of women in prison”, the scientists said. In order to get into their emotions, analysts assessed the non-verbal tendencies of 213 female prisoners. The participants ranged in age from 21 to 57 and were detained in a medium- and maximum-security correctional facility in the United States.
Researchers have defined “psychopathic traits” as a combination of interpersonal dysfunctions such as manipulation, pathological lying, callousness, lack of remorse, impulsiveness, irresponsibility and versatility of criminals. The researchers watched videotaped interviews of each girl in the study.
Head positions in each recording were categorized into one of three identified motion partitions: minimal, moderate, and extreme motion. The less movement, the greater the pronounced psychopathy, reports the New York Post.
