Hunter Schafer wants to shift the industry’s focus on gender identity

Hunter Schafer (born in 98) on the narrative surrounding trans women in the industry.

UPDATED: Sydney Sweeney is not the only one Euphoria– the actor who debuts as a scream queen this year. So does Hunter Schafer, and like his colleague, this also happens via NEON. Today they release the trailer Cuckoo.

You can read more about the horror film in the original story below.

Euphoria– the star says that she actively tries to avoid the word trans in interviews.

– As soon as I say it, it becomes explosive.

The 25-year-old says it took a while before she understood this, and wants to be asked to be reduced to one identity marker.

– It took a while to learn that, and it also took a while to learn that I don’t want to stay [redusert til] that, and I find it demeaning to me. Especially after high school, I was tired of talking about it. I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really difficult points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on.

Furthermore, the actress says that she is privileged to be able to shift the focus away from gender identity, as one of the most famous transgender people in the media.

– I know for a fact that I am one of the most famous transgender people in the media right now. And I feel a responsibility, and maybe a little guilt, for not being a spokesperson, she continues.

It is an unfair fact that transgender people are forced to become professional spokespersons for gender politics in Hollywood. Some embrace the burden, while others – understandably – only want to represent themselves and not an entire group.

– I really believe that not making it the center of what I do will allow me to move forward. It has been very deliberate. I’ve been offered tons of trans roles and I just don’t want to do it. I don’t want to talk about it.

In the same interview reveals The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakesstar that she was in a relationship with the Catalan artist Rosalía in 2019, but that today they are like family.

Cuckoo premieres across the pond on August 9, and is directed by newcomer Tilman Singer (Luz)
