The song is based on an old coal lid, and the lyrics are taken from a 1,000-year-old medieval ballad. Now the band has a newly written text for the finale.

The day before the final, the new version of the song was released.

– For Gåte, it is important to preserve and pass on the elements from traditional Norwegian folklore and folk music. It is a mirror from the past that tells us something deeper about who we are as a people and what binds us together in a community, says vocalist Gunnhild Sundli in a press release in connection with the launch.

Never played there

The final of the Melodi Grand Prix on Saturday takes place in Trondheim Spektrum. And even though the band comes from the Trondheim area, they have never played in this particular place. The arena holds 8,500 spectators.

– There will be quite a few famous people in the hall, says Sundli to NTB after the tests on Thursday.

– I know at least 7,500 of them, adds guitarist Magnus Børmark.

The band has previously played for large audiences, such as around 15,000 at the Roskilde festival.

– But it is not everyday that we play for so many people, says Sundli.

– And it must be said that the MGP audience is not like other audiences. So that’s the X-factor here. I think the atmosphere became quite wild, says Børmark.

– Finally it worked

It is Gåte’s first time in MGP.

– Now it worked. We have always brought out treasures from Norwegian folk music and culture. We have combined that and put it in a modern context. It goes down very well in Melodi Grand Prix and Eurovision, says Børmark.

Gåte is a very visual band, emphasizes Sundli.

– To understand Gåte, it is an advantage to see us. We are like a performance. And here we just have all the tools and are allowed to unfold ourselves as what we are, says Børmark.

– It fits perfectly. We only get to enlarge our world, says Sundli.
