Alex Formenton’s 2023-2024 season is on pause. The Ambri-Piotta striker returns with immediate effect to Canada, his native country, for an “indefinite period”. The Ticino club announced this Wednesday afternoon that it had granted leave “for personal reasons” to the 24-year-old player.
The Leventin organization adds that it “will not make any further statements on this matter at this time.” The winger drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2017 joined Ambri in December 2022. Since then, he has played 46 matches (29 points) in the National League with the team led by Luca Cereda. In addition, he won the 2023 edition of the Spengler Cup with the Biancoblù.
Upon his arrival at the Gottardo Arena, the Ticino club communicated that “the HCAP knows that the player and some of his teammates from the Canadian national team which won the U20 World Championship in 2018 were involved in a legal investigation which resulted in a decree of abandonment. The investigation was recently reopened due to revelations about the practices of the Canadian Federation in similar cases.
Ambri added that “if the new investigation by the Canadian police reveals elements unknown to date, the club and the player reserve the right to reassess their contractual relationship”.
This Wednesday, the media “The Globe and Mail” revealed that five players from the Canadian national team which won the U20 World Championship in 2018 were summoned by the police in London, Ontario.
