Iliad offered the best fixed network performance in Italy in 2023

According to what was found by an analysis carried out by nPerf, an independent French company based in Lyon, Iliad is the operator that has provided the best fixed network services in the Italian market during 2023 with a download speed of just under 388 Mb/s and 263.82 Mb/s as regards upload speed.

ILIAD THE MOST PERFORMING OPERATOR IN ITALY

With 18 milliseconds, Iliad also got it the best result regarding latency, i.e. the reactivity of the connection. Lower latency, remember, translates into more immediate interaction with content. A value between 0 and 30 ms is usually considered excellent allowing real-time interaction.

“In 2023, Iliad confirmed itself as a leader in the performance of the fixed Internet network in Italy. With an impressive download speed of 388 Mb/s, more than double that of its closest competitor, Vodafone, and an upload speed of 264 Mb/s, which is more than triple, Iliad has consolidated its leading position in the ranking. Its speed performance, together with robust latency, firmly secures its first place.”

Vodafone and TIM ranked second and third respectively in terms of download speed, followed by WindTre and Fastweb. Regarding latency, however, all four of these operators achieved times above 25 ms. In general, behind Iliad which obtained a total of 172,983 nPoints, we find Fastweb with 144,480 nPoints, TIM, WindTre and Vodafone.

Iliad was also the best performing FTTH network operator in Italy in 2023 with an overall nPerf score of 184.807. TIM, Fastweb, Vodafone and WindTre follow. Making an international comparison, Italy’s average fixed download speed (186 Mb/s) has exceeded that of countries such as Sweden (148 Mb/s), Germany (113 Mb/s) or Austria (106.5 Mb/s).

ILIAD ADVANTAGED BY TECHNOLOGICAL CHOICES

Iliad, as observed by nPerf, enjoys a clear advantage thanks to its strategic technological choices.

“By offering exclusively fiber optic (FTTH) based offerings, Iliad is positioned favorably compared to its competitors who rely on technologies such as ADSL and VDSL2. This approach brings numerous advantages, including higher and symmetrical speeds, greater reliability and a competitive advantage as a provider of cutting-edge technology.”

Fastweb, which according to Ookla has the fastest mobile network in Italy, continues to show constant growth in network performance, boasting a download speed of 161 Mb/s and an upload speed of 89 Mb/s. On the FTTH network, Fastweb’s evolution is even more impressive, guaranteeing its users an average download speed of 465 MB/s.

TIM achieved a substantial increase of 12,000 nPoints in just one year, moving up one position in the overall ranking. With an average download speed of 166 Mb/s and upload speed of 89 Mb/s, TIM is on par with its closest competitor, Fastweb. Wind Tre has shown slow but steady growth over the year in downloads and uploads.

Finally, Vodafone maintained the overall performance of its network relatively stable compared to the previous year. While it works well in terms of download (168 Mb/s) and upload (99 Mb/s), there is still room for improvement in latency, according to nPerf.

METHODOLOGY

The nPerf barometer is based on 653,395 tests carried out between 01/01/2023 and 31/12/2023 on fixed networks in Italy. The study uses a filtering method to reflect the real experiences of customers of Internet service providers on a specific network (mobile or fixed). Furthermore, measures are taken to prevent any measurements taken by robots from influencing the results

For a more complete understanding of the user experience, the report presents test results during both peak hours (6pm to 11pm) and off-hours (the rest of the day). Peak times, marked by network strain, can impact user experience due to congestion.

This approach helps you understand how network performance fluctuates throughout the day. To be included in our ranking an operator must reach a threshold of 5% tests. Tiscali and SkyWiFI have not reached this threshold and therefore are not included in our study.
