On April 21, during the 2022 annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia, at the forum “Achieving Carbon Neutrality: Governments in Action”, Li Bo, Vice President of the International Monetary Fund, pointed out that in order to achieve the carbon reduction goal by 2030, By 2030, the global average carbon price needs to reach US$75 per ton, and the current global carbon price is about US$5 per ton. We are still quite far from this goal.
“In order to achieve the goal of controlling the temperature rise by 1.5-2.0 degrees Celsius by the middle of this century, a 25%-50% carbon reduction task needs to be achieved by 2030, otherwise the global temperature rise will accelerate, and we will face a more difficult time in the next 10 years. The task of reducing carbon emissions.” Li Bo said.
In Li Bo’s view, the best way to achieve the 25%-50% carbon reduction task by 2030 is carbon pricing. There are different methods for carbon pricing, one is carbon trading, the other is carbon tax, both of which can achieve their goals, and countries can choose according to their own conditions.
Based on the analysis of carbon pricing by the International Monetary Fund, Li Bo pointed out that in order to achieve the carbon reduction target by 2030, the global average carbon price needs to reach US$75 per ton by 2030, while the current global carbon price is about 5 dollar a ton. (Wen Meng)
