According to Kyodo News, Japan’s Ministry of Defense announced on the 12th that the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s frigate “Inazuma” confronted the Australian navy frigate “Wala” during the joint training to the south of the Shikoku region. “Mengjia” implements “weapon and other protection” based on security related laws. The Ministry of Defense stated that this is the first time similar protection has been implemented outside the US military.
According to the report, weapons and other protection are activities to protect the ships and aircrafts of other countries from normal times. They were added to the Self-Defense Forces mission due to the implementation of the Japanese Security Law in 2016. No individual implementation case has been disclosed before, and this is a rare response. The governments of Japan and Australia have strengthened defense cooperation, and Japan intends to show that it has also expanded cooperation beyond the US military.
The target countries for weapons and other protection may also increase in the future. The report pointed out that Japan’s security law was established in a situation of mixed praise and criticism, and there may be concerns that the Self-Defense Forces will deepen integration with other countries.
The Ministry of Defense of Japan stated that “Australia is a special strategic partner. The implementation of police and guards has improved the interoperability and demonstrated that they can work closely together. The governments of Japan and Australia agreed to start coordination on weapons and other protections during the talks between the defense ministers in October last year. In the Foreign Ministers’ Defense Ministers’ Consultation (2+2) in June this year, it was agreed to be included in the target, and preparations for implementation were advanced.
Weapons and other protections for the US military were implemented for the first time in May 2017. There were 2 implementations in 2017, 16 in 2018, 14 in 2019, and 25 in 2020.
