In the United States, Democrats and Republicans have found an agreement to avoid the “shutdown”

In the United States Democrats and Republicans they said to have found a bipartisan agreement to finance the current fiscal year with 1,600 billion dollars and avoid the shutdown, that is, the partial closure of the activities of the federal government. The agreement provides, among other things, an allocation of 886 billion dollars for the defense sector (an increase of 3 percent compared to last year).

The agreement was announced by Chuck Schumer, leader of the Democrats in the Senate, and Mike Johnson, Republican speaker of the House. Now it will have to be ratified by the Senate, where the Democrats have the majority and there should be no problems, and by the House, where the Republicans have a majority, a party in which there are some far-right deputies who could obstruct.

The agreement must be approved by January 19th, the day on which the terms of the temporary agreement approved on November 16th after long negotiations expire. In fact, on November 17 the terms of another measure approved at the beginning of October after an agreement between Democrats and Republicans mediated by the then speaker of the House, the Republican Kevin McCarthy, would have expired. That October plan was opposed by the most radical wing of his party, who a few days later gave him a no-confidence vote. At the end of October, and after many internal debates, Mike Johnson was elected in his place and brokered the new agreement.
