The Supreme Court of India, the highest court in the country, has ruled that Indian opposition politician Arvind Kejriwal can be temporarily released on bail: the Court has ruled that Kejriwal can only be released until June 1st, after which he will have to surrender to the authorities. Provisional freedom will allow to campaign in the elections underway in India, which began on April 19th and will end on June 1st.
Kejriwal is one of the main opposition leaders to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP): he was arrested at the end of March, on corruption charges that the opposition considers politically motivated. His pre-trial detention had been extended, and last month the Delhi High Court, the highest court in the administrative division that includes the Indian capital New Delhi, rejected his request for bail. Kejriwal had then appealed to the Supreme Court, which granted it to him.
