Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesia will play in the round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup on Sunday (28/1/2024). This is also the first time in history that a national team has participated in a football competition between Asian countries.
Indonesia will face the Kangaroo Team, Australia, in the first match of the knockout phase. Indonesia departed as the best third ranked team. Meanwhile Australia is the winner of Group B.
Who will win?
In this match, the Garuda Team was unfortunately not the favorite. You could even say they ‘lost badly’ against Australia.
According to Opta on Saturday (27/1/2024), Australia’s winning percentage was 80.7% compared to Indonesia’s chance of only 19.3%.
One of the crucial considerations for Opta is the large distance between the rankings of Australia and Indonesia, which is 121 places apart. Indonesia is ranked 146th with 1,072.66 points and Australia is ranked 25th with 1,550.05 points.
Australia is in the top four Asian teams based on FIFA rankings. Australia is even better than countries like Egypt (33), Wales (29), and Cameroon (46).
However, this is a prediction on paper, on the ground everything can change. For example, when Greece was able to become champions of Euro 2004, Leicester City won the 2016 Premier League, or when AC Milan was able to win the 1994 Champions League by winning 4-0 against The Dream Team Barcelona coached by Johan Cruyff.
The belief that FIFA rankings and predictions are only on paper was expressed by Garuda squad coach Shin Tae-yong.
A few memories of when Shin Tae-yong’s South Korea was able to beat defending champions Germany in the 2018 edition of the World Cup in the knockout rounds and made Der Panzer go home early.
“Indonesia is currently ranked 146th, but if you look at the reality of the game, it actually doesn’t match our current FIFA ranking,” said Shin Tae-yong.
“And I want to convey that my team is the youngest team. Gaining experience playing against the best teams in Asia will help us continue to develop,” continued the coach from South Korea.
