“My message to the US is this: return immediately to the nuclear deal.” Iranian president-elect Ebrahim Raisi said today in the first press conference, which was attended by about 180 foreign journalists, including some Americans. “This – added Raisi – is the line of the current government (of President Hassan Rouhani) and of the next one, all sanctions must be removed and there must be checks on this process”. “We will support any negotiations that guarantee our national interests, but we do not intend to negotiate just to negotiate,” Raisi said.

Iran’s foreign policy will in no way be limited by the Iran nuclear deal, added Raisi: “We will not tie the interests of the Iranian people to the nuclear deal.”
Responding to a question, Raisi also stated that he did not want to meet US President Joe Biden nor did he want to negotiate on Iran’s ballistic missile program.
Vali Nasr: “Now Iran will look more and more to Russia and China”

Raisi described himself as a “defender of human rights” when he was reminded of the involvement in the execution of over 5,000 people in 1988. The name of Raisi, promoted in recent years to head of the judiciary, is linked to the so-called ‘commission of death’, a special court commissioned by Ayatollah Khomeini who in 1988 sentenced thousands of Iranian political prisoners to the gallows.
