A Good friday will be celebrated in 2024 on the 29th. The Christian date is considered National holiday and, therefore, the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT) provides that there is no mandatory work, but there are exceptions.

Already the Easter Sundaywhich follows the Passion of Christ, It’s not a national holiday. Therefore, anyone who works on weekends is subject to also working on this Sunday, the 31st, unless their State or municipality establishes the day as a holiday or optional period.

  • It is worth remembering that anyone who works on Sundays or holidays is already entitled to double pay or compensatory time off in the week following the day worked, as stated in the CLT.
  • This does not apply, however, to workers who carry out “essential activities”, such as doctors, nurses, public transport drivers, food traders, among others.

What are the exceptions regarding working on holidays?

According to the law, workers who carry out essential activities cannot charge for time off on a holiday nor are they entitled to receive higher pay for the day worked.

Those who do not carry out essential activities can be called to work by their boss, but they need to receive double pay for the day or receive compensatory time off later, indicates labor legislation.
