Israel Criticizes Honduras’ Stance on Conflict with Hamas
The Israeli ambassador to Honduras, Eldad Golan, has spoken out against recent statements made by Honduran President Xiomara Castro regarding the conflict between the terrorist group Hamas and Israel. Golan emphasized that Castro’s expressions do not promote friendship between the two nations and called for a more balanced stance.
Castro had called for an immediate ceasefire and advocated for the recognition of the Palestinian State as a means to resolve the conflict, as well as the opening of humanitarian corridors for assistance to Gaza. However, Golan insisted that any declaration must require terrorists to completely cease all hostilities and stop attacks against Israel.
At the recent VIII Summit of Celac, where 24 out of 33 members signed a declaration condemning Israel’s military incursion into Gaza, Castro highlighted the Palestinian victims of the crisis, labeling it as potentially the “cruelest genocide of the 21st century.”
In response, a dozen countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) distanced themselves from Castro’s social media posts, including a congratulatory message to Vladimir Putin and a letter to the UN regarding the conflict in Gaza. They stated that these communications were not agreed upon by CELAC.
The group of 10 countries, including Costa Rica, Argentina, and Chile, also criticized another letter from Castro addressing the situation in Haiti, noting that it did not reflect a consensual position of CELAC.
Moving forward, the national coordinators have requested that procedures approved by heads of state and government for the organic functioning of CELAC be followed. The statement emphasizes the importance of maintaining a united front on regional issues.
As tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, it remains to be seen how diplomatic relations between Israel and Honduras will evolve in the coming weeks.
