An IVECO S-Way equipped with PlusDrive, Plus’ optimized driver assistance solution based on the company’s open autonomous driving platform, has started operating on German public roads.
This is a result linked to the testing and validation process which involved numerous tests in controlled conditions, the validation of data previously collected on public roads and the in-depth training of the testers on the advanced safety functions of the vehicle.
Furthermore, TÜV SÜD tested the functional safety of the solution for trials on public roads. The collection of a large amount of real data during this crucial phase will make possible the industrialization of the self-driving truck with driver.
Featuring groundbreaking AI-based autonomous driving software and advanced sensors including lidar, radar and cameras, PlusDrive equips drivers with superhuman cognition of the vehicle’s surroundings. The experimentation on public roads in Germany will continue over the next few months, and then expand to Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland in order to collect real data on different types of roads and in various driving conditions.
The tests will also demonstrate that PlusDrive is able to manage vehicle maneuvers in a safe and automatic manner (albeit with the supervision of the driver), including centering in the lane, merging into the lane, lane changes initiated by the driver or suggested by the system, assistance in case of traffic jams and warnings to the driver.
