At least five people were killed in a stabbing attack at a Sydney shopping center on Saturday, an Australian police official told reporters. Investigators do not rule out the “terrorist” trail, whose author seems to have “acted alone” according to the Australian Prime Minister’s assertions.

This attack occurred in the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center, which was crowded with shoppers on Saturday afternoon. It left several people injured, eight of whom, including a child, were transported to hospital, emergency services said.

The New South Wales state ambulance service told AFP that a man had been shot dead by police, and that he was probably the attacker. Police did not immediately specify the motive for the attack.

Witnesses said there was panic, with people seeking shelter as police attempted to secure the area. Several people took refuge in a supermarket, where they stayed for about an hour.

Surveillance camera footage broadcast by Australian media showed a man with a large knife running through the shopping center, and injured people lying on the ground.

“The first thoughts of all Australians are with those affected and with their loved ones,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wrote on the social network “For all of us this evening, the appalling scenes at Bondi Junction (name of the shopping center, editor’s note) are beyond words and comprehension,” he also declared during a press conference.
