At the 25th edition of the global sports awards in Madrid, tennis professional Novak Djokovic won the athlete of the year trophy for the fifth time. The Serb is now joining Roger Federer, who has also won five awards.
In the women’s category, Spain’s soccer star Aitana Bonmati was named Sportswoman of the Year. She is the first footballer to receive this prestigious award.
Bonmati, the gifted midfielder from FC Barcelona, won twice at this year’s gala in the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid – she also received a Laureus Award from the Spanish women’s national team. The Spaniards became world champions in Australia and New Zealand. However, the title win was overshadowed by the kissing scandal involving the then Spanish association president Luis Rubiales.
Other Laureus awards went to footballer Jude Bellingham from Real Madrid, gymnastics star Simone Biles from the USA, skateboarder Arisa Trew from Australia and Dutch wheelchair tennis player Diede de Groot. The awards were presented by a jury of 69 athletes from the Laureus Academy.
