Di Maio’s aim was to immediately re-establish continuity in Italian political action with Libya: and for the first time in a long time, the projects of economic collaboration between the two countries also returned to first place. On Facebook Di Maio wrote that “Italy and Libya are united by important geo-strategic interests, but it is also essential to continue to relaunch economic cooperation between our companies”.

Among the topics discussed is the old Ras Jedir (Tunisia) Musaid (Egypt) coastal highway project, or the road envisaged by the Italo-Libyan friendship treaty signed in 2008 by the Berlusconi government with Muammar Gaddafi, which until today has remained a dead letter. At this point, given that the parallel administrations of Tripoli and Benghazi are reuniting under a single government, the project could restart, provided that safety conditions are guaranteed for the companies and technicians who will be engaged along the 1,800 kilometers of road that they separate the Libyan-Tunisian border from that with Egypt.

At the same time, Eni’s CEO also arrived in Tripoli Claudio Descalzi, who met Prime Minister Dbeibah in the presence of the “Gun” Minister of Oil, Mohammed Aoun. Dbeibah, who is a prominent businessman from Misrata, with a degree in engineering from Canada, stressed the need for Eni to invest and promote social responsibility in the health, education, vocational training and electricity sectors. The latter, in particular, is considered by the premier an “urgent priority” for Libya. Libya, due to the years of civil war, finds itself with an absolutely underpowered electricity production and distribution system, and with the approach of summer, Prime Minister Dbeibah is mobilizing all the resources to face the period in which they will be used at most the air conditioners.

For his part, Descalzi reaffirmed the commitment of the Italian body in all activities and operational projects in the country, with a focus on natural gas, while trying to minimize the use of energy sources with a high environmental impact.
