An earthquake with an epicenter in northern New Jersey occurred on the morning of the 5th local time. It was the strongest earthquake in the New York area in 140 years, shaking buildings in Manhattan and temporarily suspending takeoffs and landings at airports.

According to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of the earthquake was 4.8, making it the largest earthquake in the region since 1884. The quake’s epicenter was near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, but the quake was felt in Long Island, New York, the Hudson Valley and Pennsylvania.
