Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has raised concerns about a possible arrest following discussions in the Chavista Parliament about a law targeting those who oppose the regime of Nicolás Maduro. In a letter addressed to 18 countries and the EU’s top representative for Foreign Affairs, Machado expressed fear of unjustified detention for herself and her team members nationwide.
Machado, who was unable to register as a presidential candidate due to a 15-year ban on holding public office imposed by Maduro’s regime, emphasized the need for diplomatic support to ensure that electoral guarantees are fully upheld. She proposed historian Corina Yoris as a candidate in the upcoming elections and called for global protests against the electoral blockade imposed by the dictatorship.
Maduro has labeled Machado’s party a “terrorist movement” and pushed for a law to punish “fascism,” which critics believe is aimed at intimidating the opposition. The proposed law includes severe penalties for dissenting voices, sparking further concerns about the erosion of democracy in Venezuela.
Machado urged migrants to register in the electoral registry to participate in the elections and called for unity in the face of Maduro’s attempts to control the electoral process. She emphasized the importance of global support to advance towards freedom and democracy in Venezuela.
