Bisnis.com, JAKARTA — CEO Meta Platforms Inc. Mark Zuckerberg recorded a significant increase in his wealth throughout 2023, reaching US$84 billion or IDR 1,323.08 trillion in his net worth.

Reported by Business Insider, in January 2024, he was the fifth richest person in the world with a net worth of US$139.1 billion, and was on Forbes’ Real Time Billionaires list.

An increase of US$84 billion in one year means around US$9.6 million per hour or around IDR 151.21 billion per hour and the equivalent of US$230.6 million every day.

In 2021, Facebook’s rebranding to Meta is a strategic move that signals a shift towards the metaverse.

This transition is not just a name change. It also represents a shift in the company’s focus to a future involving shared virtual spaces, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. This brand change also aims to position Facebook as more than just a social media platform and marks Facebook’s entry into creating a connected digital world.

However, the rebrand comes at a time when Facebook is facing a series of challenges, including controversy over its handling of misinformation, mental health issues and user retention. Experts and analysts observe that while rebranding to Meta is a significant step, it will not immediately solve the ongoing problems.

This step was also seen as a strategic diversion from the company’s internal and external problems, which reminds us of changes in the company’s image in the past when the company tried to change public perception in the midst of a crisis.

Despite these challenges, in 2023, Meta’s share price has recovered and is approaching its all-time high. This stock value recovery significantly increased Zuckerberg’s net worth, reflecting investors’ confidence in the company’s long-term vision for the metaverse.

Sources of Profit Apart from Meta

Although he prefers to keep things simple in his gray T-shirts and is less interested in flashy accessories like expensive watches, Zuckerberg has made major investments in expanding his real estate portfolio.

He recently made headlines for his luxurious and secretive compound in Kauai, Hawaii. The complex, known as Koolau Ranch, spans more than 1,400 acres and is equipped with a series of high-end amenities and security measures.

The project is estimated to cost around US$270 million, including US$100 million for construction and US$170 million for land acquisition.

The Koolau Raunch Complex was designed complete with a 5,000 square foot underground shelter that housed energy and food supplies. The bunker is equipped with a steel door filled with concrete and is connected to the main residence via a tunnel.

The complex also includes more than 30 bedrooms and bathrooms, two mansions, nearly a dozen tree houses connected by rope bridges, a fitness center and guest house.

Zuckerberg’s real estate ventures consistently attract attention, with his compound in Hawaii being the latest example. However, this is not the first time he has been involved in an important property investment.

In 2014, Zuckerberg’s second home, a renovation project in San Francisco’s Dolores Heights neighborhood, sparked tensions among residents.

According to The San Francisco breaking latest news, extensive construction activity, including the installation of kitchen equipment and fiber optic cables, caused significant disruption. The project involved a large number of workers on site, with an estimated 40 to 50 people working daily since April 2013.

The scale and nature of the renovation led one neighbor to describe the residence as “a fortress.” home in 2022 for US$31 million.

In addition to the complex, Zuckerberg also studied high-end cattle farming on his property in Hawaii. He has invested in breeding Wagyu and Angus cattle, which are fed a unique feed including beer and macadamia nuts, with the aim of producing the highest quality beef in the world.
