Medellín increases its controls against sex tourism after the recent case of abuse of two girls

Sex workers in the city of Medellín are pushing back against the recent suspension of offering sexual services in certain areas, following a disturbing incident involving the exploitation of minors.

The Colombian city of Medellín, once known for its urban and cultural transformation, is now grappling with the rise of sexual tourism, often linked to the exploitation of children. A recent case on March 28 saw a 36-year-old American caught in a hotel with two young girls, ages 12 and 13, highlighting the issue of child sexual abuse.

Authorities have been criticized for their handling of such cases, with questions raised about possible irregularities in procedures. Interpol has now issued a notice against Timothy Alan Livingston, accused of sexual exploitation of minors.

The city has become a hub for sexual tourism, with foreigners often lured in by trafficking networks disguised as legitimate tourism companies. The alarming number of reported victims of sexual exploitation of minors in Medellín has drawn attention to the severity of the problem.

In response to these incidents, the Mayor of Medellín Federico Gutiérrez ordered a temporary suspension of sex work in certain areas, aiming to curb exploitation. However, the move has sparked controversy, with some arguing that it may push these activities underground and fail to dismantle the networks profiting from exploitation.

While some support the mayor’s actions as a step in the right direction, others are calling for a more comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of sexual exploitation. Dialogue and collaboration with affected parties are seen as essential in finding effective solutions to combat human trafficking and child sexual abuse in the city.
