As we all know, revenge is best carried out in public. Shakira releases her first album in 7 years and deals with the separation from her ex, professional footballer Gerard Piqué in the 17 songs. And she’s not the first to entertain her audience with private dirty laundry.

Music is known to be a good way to process certain feelings such as melancholy, nostalgia or love. At other times, it also serves as an outlet to exact revenge. Shakira has released her first album in seven years, with around 17 musical jabs at her ex. Here are our top 10 revenge songs of our time with a quick look behind the lyrics.

Shakira – BZRP MUSIC SESSIONS, VOL.53

Last year, this song hit like a bomb and became the most streamed Latin song in one day on YouTube. Shakira separated from her husband, football star Gerard Piqué, in 2022 and initially expressed her feelings as melancholy. But in this song, Shakira’s feelings shifted and we got this steamy work, full of not-so-subtle hints and harsh digs.

Ed Sheeran – Don’t

Celebrity affairs, dalliances and relationships. It is well known that certain people do a relay race with each other and Ed Sheeran was not spared from this. Ed Sheeran took revenge on Ellie Goulding’s short-lived love and betrayal with the song “Don’t”.

Danitsa – Captain

Sink or swim. Either you join me or I go alone. The song “Captain” by Danitsa is an ode to emancipation and self-determination. Romantic relationships don’t always have to be buried, sometimes you just have to leave people behind in order to move forward.

SZA – Kill Bill

A musical interpretation of Quentin Tarantino’s film “Kill Bill”. A revenge song of the tough class: You not only hate your ex, but you also kill him and your new one. It’s not SZA’s love story, but it did provide her with a string of nominations and awards.

Olivia Rodrigo – Vampire

In the song, ex-Disney star Olivia Rodrigo addresses an older man who takes advantage of her or, as she says, sucks her dry. It is not clear whether it is one or even two vampires. She had two older exes to whom this song could have been addressed.

Stress – Hot & cold

One of the ugliest ways to break up is through cheating. Stress dealt with his separation from model Ronja Furrer – with sheer honesty, a pinch of melancholy and a touch of hate.

Taylor Swift – We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together

Taylor Swift can enchant with revenge songs. She will obviously never try again with ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal and she makes that clear again with the song “All To Well”. Taylor generally isn’t afraid to say “goodbye” to the people in her life when it’s over.

Miley Cyrus – Flowers

Miley Cyrus showed her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth a middle finger through the flower. After the love comes to an end, superstar Miley realizes that things are going well without this guy and packs explicit hints for him in her song and video.

Eamon – F*** IT (I DON’T WANT YOU BACK)

Probably the most iconic revenge song comes from Eamon in the 2000s. The rapper curses the beautiful F-word 33 times in his song to express his heartbreak over his girlfriend’s cheating.

Frankee – F. U. R. B. (F*** You Right Back)

Is there anything juicier than revenge on a revenge song? Frankee responds to Eamon’s song with “FURB” and claims that it is his ex that he is singing about. But it’s all just fake. Frankee just jumps on the success of Eamon’s song and takes full advantage of the moment.
