Fifteen dead and at least seventy injured: this is the provisional toll of the accident in Mexico City where an elevated Metro bridge collapsed on the street below. The accident occurred around 10.30 pm local time, on line 12, near the Olivos station, south of the capital. Videos circulated on the sites and social media showed train carriages suspended in midair as ambulance sirens sounded nearby. A video published by Milenio TV shows the moment of the collapse with the bridge collapsing on the cars that were passing underneath.
After the first hours at work, the rescuers who are working on the site of the collapse had to stop “due to the risk of other collapses”. This was stated by the mayor of the metropolis, Claudia Sheinbaum, speaking with journalists on the scene of the tragedy. Rescue resumed after a crane arrived on site. The mayor confirmed that at the moment there are 15 victims and 70 injured. Of these, 34 have been transferred to hospital. “We will initiate all necessary investigations to find out the causes of the accident,” Sheinbaum said.
